Wikis vs Content Management

A heated debate is raging about the utilization of wikis as a form of content management within the enterprise. This insightful article represents a call for a truce as it points out that both wikis and formal content management systems have a significant role to play in the modern enterprise. The important thing to realize however is that these roles are fundamentally different!

The rush to build websites during the dot.com boom often meant that scant attention was paid to the design of optimised Web Content Management (WCM) systems. This insightful article by Mick MacComascaigh (Research Director with research and advisory firm Gartner) takes a look back at some of the mistakes that were made and proposes some common sense suggestions on how companies can get it right this time around.

More and more companies find it necessary to plan strategies for the optimization of web content. Too often, however, this 'strategy' consists of nothing more than engaging the services of a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) consultant. Over time it is normal for corporations to collect important information that is on paper. The only difference between one corporation and another is the rate of collection, the amount of papers collected, and importance of those papers. Document management is critical for any large organization, yet is often neglected or dismissed as too difficult. Utilizing a managed service approach can help break the document management deadlock, but how can you get the most out of such a process?

Document management is rarely a high priority for IT departments, often sidelined by more urgent problems such as security maintenance and sexier-sounding applications such as customer relationship management. However, efficient document management is essential for any organization for a variety of reasons.

It might be logical to assume that as our world becomes increasingly digitized, the demand for print services will reduce. In fact, the volume of print is increasing as machines become more efficient and the demand for color material rises. This increase is occurring in both developed and developing countries. This demand is mainly due to expansion and improvement of multifunction devices (MFDs) as well as an increased focus on print management services. Both of these aspects have increased printing efficiency and pushed the market to new heights.

As the amount of data stored by large organizations continues to mount, enterprise content management offers a means through which they can not only tame that information, but also begin using it to the benefit of the business. But with many competing products in the marketplace, defining what EMC is can be a difficult task.

The inconvenient reality of modern computing is that giving users the ability to create their own documents has resulted in headaches over how that information is used and managed.

As the barrage of information and security intrusions and losses has escalated, so too has the number of information laws and regulations. Given this activity, why hasn't more progress been made to secure our information and our systems? After all, the problem is well known; many solutions have been proposed; the technologies are proven and readily available; and the consequences of inaction are becoming clearer every day.
